it really depends on how mature your son is and his age. most kids (like me) can read maybe like 1 or 2 years aboce their age and sometimes even under it. so you should read them yourself or at least the back. or maybe you could go right up and ask him. maybe if he gives you a summary you can see how he handles it and whats it about
References :
I grew up on anime and comics and I think all kids need a super hero. Also every cartoon you see has fighting in it and their is a lot of violence in the world so even if you don't let them read comics its not going to keep your kid from the violence in the world. And think about it this way if your kid grows up playing games and reading comics at least your kid wont be out on the streets hanging out with the wrong crowed. I have two kids one boy 7 years old and a girl 3 years old and my son love comics and ninja's but yet he is a very good boy and smart too because he reads all the time. you just cant make your kid read all the boring school books and not let him read for fun other wise you teach him that reading is not ever fun.
References :
I know Marvel has a rating system in place for their comics, and I believe many other comics do as well. If your son is purchasing comics in a comic shop, you should take a stroll in there as well (or a phone call) and ask about the titles your son reads. Most comic shops are run by the owners themselves and are very knowledgeable and willing to help. Or you could try google searching the titles for yourself and see what kind of hits are generated from that and judge accordingly.

Keep in mind also there are few comics a young boy could pick up that would have as much violence, nudity, or inappropriate language as a rated R movie.
References :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Rating_System

I am happy to know that children are still being taught to read. I learned to read from comic books and not from video games and text messaging. Perhaps you can get him some wholesome Christian comic books. Good luck!
