The best thing to do is to go to your local comic store and find or order the old compendiums of the comics. I know that just recently DC put out a large book of old Batman reprints. There are old Super-man re-prints out there too. Check e-bay for CD’s or DVD’s that have info on the origins of teams and major info of what happens in the books. I would also purchase a Overstreet Price Guide. I know this sounds kind of weird if you don’t want to purchase any comics, but they mention any key moment in every comic book made.

You can read lots of Superman’s best classic stories on line for free at Superman Through the Ages. They have them from 1939 through 2000, including some that have never before been published! Check out The K-Metal from Krypton.
