I love reading comics, graphic novels especially. I know a good number of people at school that read books or poetry, but whenever I try to recommend a graphic novel, lets say, Watchmen for example, they automatically dub it as dumb because it’s a comic book.
I just don’t get this. Why do some people tend to think ALL comics are only about superheroes beating up bad guys? They’re not.
Has anyone else dealt with this before?
I know what you mean and I think that the problem is that people think that comics are just for little kids, before I really started getting into them I know that I did. And it’s really a shame that people jump to this conclusion because like you said they automaticlly think that a masterpiece like watchmen is just not worth their time and they are really missing out on alot.

yeah i get what you mean, sometimes if I’m reading a manga people look at me like “why the heck is this chick reading this junk?” XD lol well i think they think its dumb because its like a cartoon sort of and they think its just for little kids ( yeah right)… thats my theory because i usually get the same reaction when i try to talk to some one about anime… -_- i guess they just don’t get it lol

yeah
unfortunately
I tried to get my english teacher to read Death Note
but he dismissed it as childish the second I said it was a graphic novel
even though it’s more engaging than anything he’s prolly ever read
I think he’s a huge hypocrite because he gets mad at us when he dismiss anything without trying it (reading wise)
My sister was going to read watchmen, but she couldn’t concentrate enough to read a graphic novel. lol XD

no, don’t worry, because it all depends on a person’s taste. Maybe most people around you are just into books or something like that. Many people are still graphic novel lovers. I read both books and mangas. Other people just think reading comic books is dumb because, well, more than half of it is covered with pictures-reading books without pics help the imagination grow, and comics have a direct sort of language so it’s easier to understand. Books, on the other hand, are told to be ‘boring’ by other people because there are just words, words, and words.

In America comics and graphic novel are synonymous with juvenalia and are readily dismissed , erroneously so . These forms of media are indeed legitimate vehicles for plot-lines and literature and should not be discarded as ephemera .
