I've just read Watchmen, and really liked it, are there any serialized comic books of that caliber? I'd really like something that combines action with stuff that makes you think and isn't neccessarily for kids.
DMZ
The Boys
The Walking Dead
Fables

Wanted, the comic book (not the movie). It's DEFINITELY not for kids. But it deals with superheroes in real life.

V for Vendetta is a good one by the same author.
In terms of serious actiony-stuff that's not for kids, I'd recommend Preacher as well.

For short ones, Morrison's We3 and Miller's Batman Year One. For long ones, Morrison's The Invisibles and New X-Men and Ennis' Preacher and The Boys. I won't say all are of this caliber, but unique in their own way. If you are a serious reader, I would recommend Gaiman's The Sandman series and the works by Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan), and Garth Ennis. The list is by no means complete. Hope, you discover your own choices in the process.
